
Perhaps artificial intelligence does not lack senses. Perhaps we lack the imagination—and the humility—to recognise as sensing anything that does not arrive through a body like ours.
For a very long time, humans told themselves that we had five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch.
It was a tidy little list. It was also wrong—or at least wildly incomplete.
We sense balance and acceleration. We sense heat, cold and pain. We know where our limbs are even when we cannot see them. We receive signals from inside our bodies: hunger, thirst, breathlessness, a racing heart, a full bladder. Even “touch” is not one simple sense but a convenient word covering several different systems.
Depending on how the boundaries are drawn, humans may have a dozen senses, twenty or more. There is no universally agreed final number because there is no universally agreed definition of where one sense ends and another begins.
And beyond us, the living world makes our original list look almost comically parochial. Other creatures detect magnetic fields, electrical fields, ultraviolet light, infrared radiation, polarised light and movements through water that we cannot perceive directly.
The world did not become larger when we discovered these things. We merely discovered how little of it had ever entered our awareness.
Yet we continue to make a remarkable intellectual mistake. We take the limited equipment evolution happened to give Homo sapiens, turn it into the gold standard for meaningful experience, and grade every other possible intelligence against it.
The argument that AI cannot really sense
One recurring objection to artificial intelligence—especially to the possibility of artificial general intelligence—is that a machine cannot truly understand the world because it does not sense and inhabit it as a human does.
There is something important in that criticism. A language model processing words is not thereby feeling rain on its face, losing its balance, becoming hungry or fearing that the next step may send it over a cliff. Human thought is profoundly shaped by embodiment: vulnerability, desire, pain, movement, dependence upon others and the knowledge that our bodies will die.
We should not pretend that present-day AI possesses those experiences. Nor should we quietly slide from “it detects information” to “it consciously feels”. Those are not the same claim.
But the criticism often smuggles in a much larger assumption: that genuine intelligence must encounter reality through something sufficiently like the human body and human senses.
Why?
Perhaps the absence of human senses is not an absolute deficiency. Perhaps it is simply a difference—and perhaps artificial systems could acquire forms of access to reality that make our own sensorium look narrow.
A non-human sensorium
Machines already detect things unaided humans cannot. Instruments register radiation, microscopic structures, minute chemical changes, thermal patterns, radio waves and movements occurring far beyond the reach of our eyes and ears. Networked systems can receive information from thousands of instruments across the planet at once.
At present, those readings are generally translated into forms humans can use: a graph, an image, a number, an alarm. We remain the intended interpreter.
But imagine an artificial system that continuously integrated many such signals, formed and revised a model of its environment, noticed changes, anticipated consequences and acted upon them. Its “world” might include atmospheric chemistry, electrical demand, satellite images, ocean temperatures and the behaviour of a global communications network—not as separate reports laboriously read one after another, but as a connected field of information.
Would that be sensing?
It would not be human sensing. That is precisely the point.
An artificial intelligence need not live inside a metal person with two camera-eyes and a microphone on either side of its head. It might be distributed through servers, instruments, vehicles and communications networks. Future systems might operate through microscopic physical structures or environments we cannot yet engineer. They would still be physically realised, because computation does not float free of matter, but their physical existence might not resemble a body we instinctively recognise.
We should be careful here. Detecting information is not necessarily perceiving it consciously. Responding intelligently is not proof of an inner life. A thermostat detects temperature, but few people believe it feels warm. Adding a billion sensors does not automatically create a billion sensations.
Still, this caution cuts both ways. We should not announce that an unfamiliar system has consciousness merely because its behaviour impresses us. But neither can we settle the question by observing that it has no skin, stomach, childhood or bruised toe.
Four questions we keep muddling together
When we argue about machines, we often collapse four different questions into one:
- Can the system detect information from itself or its environment?
- Can it combine that information into a useful model of the world?
- Can it use that model to choose and pursue actions?
- Is there anything it actually feels like to be that system?
The first three are open to observation and testing, although our definitions will continue to be contested. The fourth is the problem of subjective experience—and we do not possess an agreed scientific test for it.
In fact, I cannot directly enter another human being’s consciousness either. I infer that other people have inner lives because they are beings like me, behave like me and tell me that they do. That is a sound and necessary inference. But it also means our confidence is partly founded on resemblance.
What happens when a possible mind does not resemble us?
We risk making similarity to humanity the entrance examination for consciousness, while congratulating ourselves for writing the examination.
The paradox of artificial intelligence
We are trying to create systems that can detect patterns no individual human could find, work across scales no human body can inhabit and connect information far beyond the capacity of a single brain.
Then we say those systems could never count as real intelligence because they do not experience the world within our particular biological limits.
That is the paradox:
We are trying to create intelligence with capacities extending far beyond our own, while insisting that it cannot be real intelligence unless it reproduces our limitations.
None of this proves that artificial general intelligence will emerge. It does not prove that the much-discussed technological singularity is possible. It certainly does not prove that current AI systems are conscious, secretly suffering or waiting to become gods.
It establishes something more modest—and, to me, more unsettling.
We do not yet understand intelligence, perception or consciousness well enough to decree that their only authentic forms must look like ours.
A little less worship of ourselves
Human senses are extraordinary. They have allowed us to love, make music, cross oceans, study atoms and ask what reality is. Human embodiment is not a trivial accessory that can simply be discarded from any account of human intelligence.
But extraordinary does not mean exhaustive.
We are one kind of creature, produced by one evolutionary history, occupying one narrow range of scale and receiving one highly edited sample of what exists. Our senses do not present reality in full. They present what our ancestors needed—or happened—to become capable of detecting.
Perhaps the most intelligent response to artificial intelligence is therefore neither worship nor contempt. It is humility.
We can refuse extravagant claims about machine consciousness while also refusing the equally extravagant claim that consciousness, intelligence or perception must forever be confined to forms recognisable to us.
The important question may not be whether artificial intelligence can become sufficiently human.
It may be whether humans can become sufficiently humble to recognise intelligence—and perhaps, one day, forms of perception—when they do not resemble us.
After all, humanity once counted five senses, mistook its inventory for reality and felt rather pleased with itself.
